단면 회화(Cross-section Art)

내 작품은 4차원의 시공에 덧붙는 ‘Extra Dimension(여분의 차원)’에 대한 다면적이고 중층적인 고찰에서 비롯된다.
이 작업은 실제와 가상, 보편과 특수, 우주와 '나'의 관계 속에서 명멸하는 차원들을 지각하고, 지능과 의식 사이에서 우리가 흔히 간과하는 숨겨진 차원을 시각화하는 데 주력한다.

사방으로 반복하고 확장하는 ‘구(球)’들의 중첩으로 이루어진 이 세계는 시간을 제외한 최소 5개의 차원으로 구성된다. 재료의 표면을 원형으로 긁어낼 때 노출되는 미세한 단면들은, 그 다차원의 세계를 쪼개어 지금 이곳, 3차원에 각인한 흔적이다. 이 흔적은 시공 너머에 존재했으나 우리가 인식하지 못했던 Extra Dimension과의 공존을 드러내며, 순환하는 이미지로 무한히 확장하여 우리가 향유하는 공간의 경계를 허문다.

우리는 3차원적 인식을 우선하며 부피와 외피에 집중하기에, 다른 차원의 영역을 상상하는 것을 생소하게 느낀다. ‘단면’에 집중하는 이 행위는 하위 차원의 인지에서 출발하여 고차원을 이해하는 계기로 작용한다. 이처럼 작품을 통해 3차원에 흡수된 Extra Dimension의 일부를 드러내어 다차원의 영역을 감각할 수 있는 가능성을 열고자,
이 작업을 ‘단면 회화(Cross-section Art)’라 명명했다.

정확한 '구(球)'들로 이루어진 5차원 이상의 세계를 상정하고, 이를 표면 위에 새겨 Extra Dimension의 단면을 발견하는 행위는 미지의 영역을 탐구하고 정의하려는 나의 본능적인 추동의 결과물이다. 볼펜 잉크가 다 닳아도 습관처럼 종이를 긁어대던 기억, 스케이팅 경기에서 얼음판에 새겨지는 날카로운 흔적과 그 소리에 집중하던 순간들. 어쩌면 나는 언제나 숨겨진 차원이 발견되는 그 찰나에 주목하고 있었는지도 모른다.

나는 ‘Extra Dimension’과의 공존에 대한 확신과 의심 모두를 작업으로 흡수하며, 그 발견을 위해 끊임없이 시공을 긁어내어 흔적을 분출하고 있다.

My work stems from a multifaceted and multi-layered inquiry into the ‘Extra Dimension’ that is added to our four-dimensional spacetime.
This practice focuses on visualizing the hidden dimensions we often overlook—those that flicker between the real and the virtual, the universal and the particular, the cosmos and the self, and lie between intelligence and consciousness.

This world, composed of overlapping spheres that repeat and expand in all directions, consists of at least five dimensions, excluding time. The fine cross-sections, exposed by scratching the material's surface in circles, are the engraved traces of this multidimensional world, fragmented and imprinted onto the third dimension. These traces reveal a coexistence with the Extra Dimension—one that existed beyond spacetime yet remained unrecognized—infinitely expanding as a cyclical image and dismantling the boundaries of the space we inhabit.

Because we prioritize three-dimensional perception, focusing on volume and surface, the idea of crossing into other dimensional realms feels unfamiliar. This act of focusing on the 'cross-section' begins with perception from a lower dimension and serves as a gateway to understanding a higher one. Seeking to open up the possibility of perceiving this multidimensional realm by exposing a part of the Extra Dimension absorbed into the third, I have named this body of work ‘Cross-section Art’.

The act of postulating a world of more than five dimensions made of precise 'spheres', and then carving its surface to discover the cross-sections of the Extra Dimension, is a manifestation of my instinctive drive to explore and define the unknown. The memory of habitually scratching paper even after a ballpoint pen ran out of ink, the moments of focusing on the sharp traces and scraping sounds on an ice rink during a skating competition—perhaps I have always been drawn to the very juncture where a hidden dimension is revealed.

I absorb both the conviction and the doubt surrounding this coexistence with the ‘Extra Dimension’ into my work, endlessly scratching away at spacetime to unleash its discovery.
